School dies: 9 reasons not to go to school

If a child does not want to go to school, he probably has reasons for it. But parents also have reason to think about the need for schooling. Mikhail Epstein raised this topic and told 9 reasons not to go to school.

Is it necessary to school? With the advent of the first shoots of home education in Ukraine, this issue has become more urgent. One of the reasons for the spread of homeschooling is the quality of the knowledge gained.

School, school education, not to go to school, why go to school, Michael Epstein, Elstein about schoolMikhail Epstein is a Russian philosopher, linguist, literary scholar, cultural studies, professor of cultural theory and Russian literature at Emory University, professor of Russian literature and cultural theory and head of the Center for Humanitarian Innovations at Durham University. Over the years he has published 30 books on philosophy, linguistics and other sciences. Closely confronted with the realities of school education, Epstein derived his 9 reasons for not going to school.

“I will outline the trend briefly - the mass school loses the meaning of its main activity. Roughly speaking - the school as a school dies out. What I mean? Let's try to estimate the list of answers to the question “Why should a child go to school?”. I mean not the social security function of the school as an institution: the presence of the law on compulsory education, the problem with where to put children while the parents are at work and so on. In this sense, the mass public school will not go anywhere, and will live for a long time. I am talking about the sense of school as a place where a new generation in general is being brought up, and a whole new generation is being formed, in particular, ”writes Epstein.

WHY SCHOOL NEED?

1. To gain knowledge

But I think that it will not be news for anyone if I say that knowledge as information can now be obtained from many other sources - the notorious Internet, in particular. Many studies show that modern teens are more likely to get the necessary information from television and from their peers than from school. And, frankly speaking, it’s difficult to call a mass school a place where children learn something really new and relevant about modern science, technology, economics, social life. Those who are more or less familiar with existing training programs will confirm this.

Summary: the school today is no longer the only (and even the main) source of knowledge for the younger generation.

2. To learn to learn

Here too there is a big problem. Probably this would be the main task of the school: in a situation where it is more and more difficult to keep up with all the accelerating changes in the volume of concrete knowledge, to teach children to cope with this flow of information. But the trouble is that the mass school does not know how to do this.

It does not teach independent thinking, forcing children to repeat the truths expressed by the teacher and giving marks for this (precisely for this). She does not teach working independently with information - any university teacher will confirm that the majority of incoming applicants cannot do a normal outline, cannot read the text independently and highlight the main thing in it, do not know how to speak and orally express their own thoughts, etc.

So, you need to learn this somewhere else. If the parents of the child want to teach him that. Well, for example, it happens all the time - when parents do homework with their children. And, thus, it turns out that the main thing that the school should teach is to work independently with information — parents, those who can, teach.

3. Then to pass exams and get a certificate

The experience of many families shows that it is not necessary to go to school every day for 10 (and now 11 years as well) years to pass exams and get a certificate. You can study at home, you can study and take exams externally ... And also through externship you can receive a state certificate.

Moreover, with a normal organization of their lives, many children are able to master the school curriculum in a shorter period of time and pass exams without any damage to their health. And, thus, do not spend 10-11 years on formal going to school.

4. Then to enter a university

Experience shows that at the moment admission to a university is not directly related to going to school for 10-11 years. First, it turns out that a huge number of high school students in 10-11 grades study in parallel in two educational institutions: at school - for a “tick” and a certificate, and at the university for preparatory courses - for admission.

In grades 10-11, it turns out that the abundance of the offered subjects is completely unrelated to the exams that need to be taken at a particular university. And in a sense, the school even interferes with the preparation for admission, overloading the adolescent "doubly" - by studying the "unnecessary" things for him ...

And this situation is very “prominent”, when many high school students in April-May turn out to be “admitted” to this or that university, having passed through the system of competitions, but still continue to study the school curriculum ...

5. To get support for those who do not have time, do not fit into the general terms, not like all

Maybe a mass secondary school is ready to help those who do not fit into the general framework for one reason or another? No, rather, the mass school is glad to push away such inconvenient ones from themselves, creating all the conditions for them to leave the school. These are the children who are replenished with private schools, externalities, and private tutors.

6. To get the basics of professional skills (competence), which then allow you to find a job in the modern economy

Unfortunately, here too the mass school does not succeed. It does not allow adolescents to experience life in the real economy, does not teach the basics of human communication, does not give normal knowledge of foreign languages, going to school will not help a graduate to learn how to present themselves when applying for a job, etc.

7. To learn to live in a team

Collective life is also a problem. First, in the past such a life was possible only if the class was lucky with the leader. What happened not often. In recent years, the state has completely ceased to pay attention to this area of life, leaving in the forefront to the teacher not pedagogical, but methodological tasks.

The main thing for a teacher is to be a subject, to prepare children for the Unified State Exam, and not to take care of establishing certain relationships in the classroom, in some other school community. Pedagogical Institute continues to contribute to this, still growing from students at best, good teachers of the subject, but not teachers working with the team.

And in this sense, if the parents want the child to have “his team”, then it is often easier to look for “on the side” - in a circle, club, section, expedition ... But not at school.

eight. In order to find friends, their own “reference” group, people of close friends, speaking their modern teenage language, their party

Well, friends, like a team, can be (and sometimes easier) found not only at school. But with value-related people, it is even more difficult. In the mass school do not come by choice. A class is not a group of people that the children themselves choose.

The composition of a class is not determined by them and their desire, but by an external will. So there is no question of the proximity of values. And if there is no efficient teacher next to adolescents who attend to the cultivation of these common values, they will not arise during the whole period of study. But in circles, clubs, sections, where children come to their choice, such proximity will appear sooner. It is in them that children find an outlet.

There are, of course, schools in the city where it says a lot about the fact that children are going there for a particular relationship of life values, priorities and preferences. But, you see, such schools are rather an exception to the rule, confirming the rule. In short, if school is a place where “your own party” can appear for your child, then it’s certainly not the only place where such a place can arise.

9. To develop and grow personally.

This is also a question. In the mass school there are practically no people or time to do this in a special way. Psychologist - at best, one or two for the whole school. The class teacher - and the group does not have time to do, not that of individuals. Yes, and they are not trained (like all teachers who graduate mainly from a pedagogical institute) for individual support and accompaniment of a person, and they don’t have time for that, to be honest.

Mass school is not so important this very personal growth of your child. Roughly speaking, they do not ask for it. Look at the criteria by which the school is evaluated. Everything there, except the personal growth of children and teachers. And for not asking, it usually does not grow in mass institutions.

If there is no individual will of a particular teacher (and then you are very lucky) or a particular director, which happens less often, because it is very difficult to write these processes into the system of the work of the mass school. And then, again, it turns out that the parents themselves need to be engaged in this business.Either look for a “club company” with a good efficient adult, or psychological training centers, which are becoming more and more common in the city ... The seeker will find ... But again, most often outside school.

So it turns out that the entire inner meaningful essence of the school leaves the school, only the outer frame remains: the walls; the law obliging her to attend; convenience, quietly after serving the required number of years, get a crust; the opportunity to hand over the child to the “storage room” while the parents are at work But you must admit that all of these are non-school functions of a school.

And how SCHOOL mass school dies out. Reborn in other forms. And education (if we talk about education, and not about the document) now, it turns out, you can get not only (and not so much) in school, but in other ways. And many teenagers feel it precisely and subtly, and many not only feel, but also begin to speak out loud. And many parents see and understand this. This is evident from the ever-increasing tendency for parents to remove children from the mainstream school.

Parents teach children at home on their own, transfer them to private schools, arrange them to external studies, the number of parent groups grows, uniting families in a joint search for the development of their children, a growing number of groups offering educational programs to children outside of school ...

And it seems to me that this trend will only increase. At least, I do not see any changes in public policy in education that would allow to assert the opposite.
