The African National Congress’ (ANC) KwaZulu-Natal interim committee chairperson Sihle Zikalala has warned his party that it was at risk of losing the important Indian vote in the province. Zikalala said Indian voters had lost trust in the ANC and were leaving the party in large numbers.

Zikalala was speaking at the ANC’s Greater KwaDukuza regional conference in Salt Rock, outside Durban on Saturday.

Greater KwaDukuza is the first region in the province to hold a conference since the provincial working committee gave the green light for all outstanding regional and provincial conferences to be completed.

Briefly.co.zagathered that Zikalala once again dismissed speculation and reports which claim provincial leaders are running a campaign aimed at discrediting and ultimately ousting President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Zikalala said: “We are united in support of the leadership as elected and in the implementation of the programme of action. I’m saying this because there are those who continue to say no, KwaZulu-Natal is mobilising against the national leadership - I heard some of the national leaders saying so. We are not going to respond to them, we will seek engagement inside the structures of the ANC.”

Zikalala said women-led cooperatives and those who were willing to work the land themselves should be given priority in the allocation of land received through the proposed expropriation without compensation plan.

He said in the past land was awarded to businesspeople through tenders and the land ended up being used as venues for lavish parties instead of being used for the economic benefit of those in the local community.

The completion of the first regional conference is an important step for the KwaZulu-Natal ANC in holding its provincial elective conference. There are eight more regional conferences to conclude, but the ANC said plans for these conferences were already at an advanced stage.
